Trudeau says COVID-19 shutdown could last weeks longer in the country!

Since the start of the country shutdown, Canada’s economy has contracted sharply when shops and business close. In the preliminary data shared by Statistics Canada, many economic activities had collapsed in March; which suggests the drop could be a record 9%. Speaking in front of his residence in Ottawa, Trudeau announces the country is still battling with the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Loosening controls too quickly could mean the country gives up the ground gained, he states. He added: “With spring coming, people are looking outside, wanting to get out, wanting to this to be over — I understand that. It will be weeks more before we can seriously consider loosening the restrictions. As impatient as people are getting all across the country, we need to continue to hold on if what we’re doing as sacrifices are going to be worth it.”

To support its citizens, the federal government is now freeing the eligibility criteria for emergency federal pandemic aid. The action will help to cover seasonal workers that go without jobs. Furthermore, it will also support those that got their hours cut drastically cut. In a more detailed announcement, people who are making up to $1,000 a month will be able to qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit for COVID-19. On the other hand, all who have employment insurance benefits that recently run out will also be eligible for the $2,000-a-month compensation. So far, nearly six million people had applied for the support campaign.

Current Economy Situation

The Bank of Canada warned that the downturn tied to COVID-19 would be the worst on record over the year. Furthermore, the economic recovery will depend on the effectiveness of the country’s current measures to control the pandemic.
