FDA accepts Batelle’s process for disinfecting N95 mask!

According to the media, the Food and Drug Administration has finally approved a process which should help clean the much-needed N95 protective face masks. This new method will allow people to reuse it, based on a press release from the agency. The Columbus-Ohio based Battelle introduced it as a “vapour phase hydrogen peroxide” process to decontaminate the masks. For now, they are needed by healthcare providers and others to protect against the spread of Coronavirus.

The Ohio company revealed that its Critical Care Decontamination Systems could sterilize up to 80,000 masks per day. After receiving criticism from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine back in Sunday, the FDA has removed their limit on the number of masks that Batelle could disinfect. Previously, DeWine had headed to Twitter to call upon President Trump to tore down the first restriction of only 10,000 masks per day. Soon after, Trump has answered with a reply saying “Hope the FDA can confirm Mask Sterilization equipment rapidly.”

A few hours later, the FDA announced that they would fix the emergency use authorization for Battelle’s process, from ‘partial’ to ‘full’. The N95 respirator is a snug-fitting mask that people could only use one time. However, it proved to be the most effective protective gear that could stop droplets of the virus from contagious through people’s mouth and nose area. The CDC – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the effectiveness of these masks highly depend on proper use and use.

What’s next?

Associated Press reported that importing essential ministry equipment were decreasing sharply due to the closing of many Chinese manufacturers. On the other hand, big companies such as Facebook, Apple, and Soft Bank have claimed that they would be donating the N95 masks for the healthcare organizations to support their efforts to cope with the pandemic.
