In details, the World Health Organization cooperated with representatives of the gaming industry to debut the #PlayApartTogether campaign. By that, this method encourages everyone to follow social distancing and hygiene suggestions to avoid spreading the Coronavirus, officially named COVID-19. For instance, you should stay at home and play video games online. Moreover, representatives from some of the world’s largest gaming studios have signed contracts with this campaign.

“Ensuring a secure connection with each other is more important than ever. Games are the perfect platform because of through the lens of joy, purpose, and meaning, and they connect people. We are proud to participate in such a worthwhile and necessary initiative”. CEO of Activision Blizzard, Bobby Kotick, said. And Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent stimulates to everyone to stay friendly while performing social distancing by playing a game online together.

This seems to quite ironic that WHO is now promoting gaming as an amusement. Meanwhile, previously, it was one of the organizations that push the recognition of online ‘gaming disorder’ as a mental health domain. However, while there have been cases showing playing video game affects the lives of some people negatively; many psychologists wonder such a small supplement model based on substance abuse will be enough to explain this behaviour. The lack of research and united definition of gaming disorder made it a controversial topic in the world of psychology.

In conclusion

In the report shared on the WHO health journey last year, doctors have raised the concern about gaming from the survival of loot boxes to the collecting of virtual armour or weapons. E-Sports and streaming, the existence of many players, can contribute to the addiction of gaming despite the lack of a robust scientific demonstration to support these concerns.
